A Place Where Social Work & Spirituality Meet

“Social workers are expected to work ethically and effectively with religion and spirituality as relevant to clients and their communities and to refrain from negative discrimination based on religious or nonreligious beliefs.”

~ Council On Social Work Education

Given the pervasiveness of religion and spirituality within the lives and cultures of the people we serve, social workers need a diverse understanding of religion and spirituality in order to cultivate a holistic view of the person in environment and to promote the satisfaction of basic needs, holistic well-being, and radical social justice for all human beings of every faith and non-faith in communities around the world. (CSWE, 2023)

In an age of spiritual diversity, where social workers encounter a wide range of religious backgrounds, interfaith education is a vital asset in working towards a world where people of different faiths, ideologies, and traditions can find common values to build a shared life together. (AAC&U, 2023) As of 2019, the Journal of Sociology and Social Work, found that the social work profession has increasingly come to recognize the profound importance of spirituality in developing an understanding of the person as a whole. Incorporating spirituality into social work practice can help empower clients and open new pathways for growth and healing. (Lee, 2019)
